Job purpose:
The Shift Engineer (SE) provides leadership to a crew of 5 - 10 people. They will obtain support from the Plant Foreperson, Supervisor and Operation’s Specialists for the purpose of optimizing district operations and crew functionality. Under the authority of the Plant Foreperson and Chief Steam Engineer, the SE is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the entire plant on a shift basis. 

Primary responsibilities include:
  • Fulfill all of the Alberta Boilers Safety Association legal expectations / requirements.
  • Ensures the monitoring and optimization of overall plant operation, coordination of daily operation activities and information flow between operating units.
  • Leads first hour emergency response activities.
  • Mentors the crew, co-ordinates the crew appraisal process, shift scheduling and crew training.
  • Ensures Operator PMs, Emergency Response Exercises, Safety Meetings and Equipment Safety Checks are scheduled and completed.
  • Provides technical expertise and troubleshooting capabilities to the crew.
  Results expected:
  • Overall plant operation and crew efficiency.
  • Resolution of operation problems.
  • Detailed log of significant events.
  • Support and steward operation within guidelines and specifications.
  • Support and promote continuous improvement of the operation.
Key capabilities (include education; experience; certification; language fluency)
  • 1st Class Steam Certificate
  • Strong DCS skills or the ability and desire to attain these skills.
  • Strong working level knowledge of all Plant Units including the Control Room
  • High level of communication, leadership and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational / troubleshooting skills with the ability to proactively manage / prevent problems
  • Ability to remain calm under frequently changing conditions.
Work environment
  • Works with minimal supervision.
  • Works a day and night, rotating 12-hour shift.
  • Dynamic environment with frequently changing conditions
Business information The area has over 5100 wells and five major plant facilities. Cold Lake is a thermal operation using CSS and SAGD technology. Imperial's workforce at Cold Lake is approximately 500 IOR employees plus an equal number of contractors. This is a high growth area with new wells and surface facilities being added.
