Our client, a metallurgical plant solutions and a full-line supplier are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer with Blast Furnace/Refractory experience to join their team!
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
As a member of the Refractory discipline within the Engineering Department, the Engineer shall provide an engineering service for the company in either an individual basis or as part of a team. The engineer will be responsible for the Engineering of a specific portion of a project. Project responsibilities: productivity, technical output, progress, health and safety and compliance. The engineer will be required to establish working relationships with engineers, Project teams, Procurement / Logistics, Sub-contractors, Suppliers and Customers.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY / TASKS:
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Engineer shall be responsible for:
- Preparation of basic and/or detail refractory drawings Process Plant and Equipment.
- Checking of Engineering Drawings produced within the department.
- The preparation of Engineering Specifications for the purchase and supply of Refractories.
- Preparation of the Technical portion of purchase orders for the supply of Refractories.
- Technical Monitoring of Procurement contracts for the supply of Refractories.
- Provide Technical Supervision during the Site Installation and Commissioning phases of Projects.
- Ensuring that drawings are allocated correct drawing identification numbers and entered in the Central Document Register.
- Electronic filing of drawings in appropriate folders.
- To organise the plotting of drawings. Assist Engineers with the preparation of Specifications, data sheets, MTO’s and other Engineering documentation.
- Support SCM, Projects and Sales in pre-projects, preparing enquiries and reviewing supplier offers.
- Attending customer sites for inspection of linings and where applicable make recommendations for repairs Assist with the auditing, assessment and approval of new suppliers and products.
- Generally, provide technical advice and guidance to more junior departmental and agency staff.
- Undertake inspection of Refractories at vendor works.
- Occasional working in other departments (e.g. plant, mechanical) as design engineer, according to balance of project workload.
COMPETENCIES Knowledge & Skills:
Essential:
- The Engineer should have a good understanding of the requirements of heavy industry turn-key projects.
- Basic design skills, able to work alone or in groups to produce innovative, robust designs, built with both manufacture and operation in mind and suited to the harsh environment they will operate in.
- Design calculation ability.
- Basic CAD skills (Preferably Autodesk), training available depending on experience.
- Word processing and spreadsheet calculations.
- Working knowledge of environmental, health & safety and technical regulations.
Desirable
- Problem solving and analytical thinking advantageous.
Experience:
Essential:
- Experience in heavy industry, preferably in Refractory Engineering role.
- Candidates should possess a formal qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
Desirable
- Experience of project engineering and the project lifecycle from contract award through to installation/commissioning from a specific disciplined engineering view. Experience of iron & steel industry advantageous.
EDUCATIONAL / PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ideally educated to degree level in engineering discipline, HNC / HND or other qualifications may be considered depending on experience.
