Job Title: Oversight Mechanical Technologist / Fire Protection SME
Location:  Edmonton
Length: 12 Month contract with possible extension
Rotation: Mon-Fri in office with some travel required

Primary Focus:
During a fixed 12-month period, the primary focus of the Fire Protection Subject Matter Expert (SME) is to provide technical expertise on fire suppression and fire protection design, integrity, and Regulatory Management of Change (RMOC) for the client’s liquid hydrocarbon pipeline systems. Technical guidance will follow the applicable design codes, industry standards, and the client’s standards and equipment specifications.

Specific Accountabilities:
  • Act as the technical expert for the RMOCs regarding the prohibited or restricted usage of firefighting foams containing Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) and their suitable replacements, with a primary focus on US jurisdictions
  • Ensure quality and compliance with the client and regulatory standards by providing engineering support to Operations, Projects, and other groups, as it pertains to fire suppression and fire protection systems
  • Provide guidance, share knowledge and code understanding with the Mechanical Engineering team and other client stakeholders, as it pertains to fire suppression and fire protection systems
  • Uphold the client’s values of safety, integrity, respect, and inclusion

12-Month Scope:
  • Collaborate with Operations, Emergency Response, and Regulatory and Law to manage the PFAS RMOCs for the applicable US jurisdictions
  • Assess and complete the necessary updates for the fire protection specifications and standards, including, but not limited to, the applicable revisions related to firefighting foams containing PFAS
  • Act as the SME and main point of contact for Operations and Asset Management regarding fire suppression system integrity assessments, failure analysis, and maintenance requirements
  • Provide timely technical recommendations to necessary internal stakeholders such as Regulatory (e.g., code interpretation, request for information), Risk (e.g., risk identification and evaluation, PHAs), Projects (e.g., deviation requests, design review, code interpretation)
  • Document the client’s fire system designs and applicable requirements specific to the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ)
  • Implement a central depository for the client’s fire system designs and annual fire suppression testing reports

Contacts:
  • Internal communication will occur with:
    • Peers and leadership across the business unit
    • Peers and leadership in different business units (e.g., Emergency Response, Operations, Regulatory, Law, Supply Chain Management)
  • External communications will occur with:
    • Industry peers who may share information through conferences or other sessions
    • The AHJ as required for applicable jurisdictions across Canada and the US
  • Reports directly to the Supervisor, Mechanical Engineering within the LP Operations Engineering team

Working Conditions:
  • Primarily office environment
  • Air travel within Canada and US, occasional local travel driving company vehicle or rental vehicle. May require Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Overnight business or field trips may be required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • 10 years of related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Applied knowledge of government regulatory and industry codes regarding fire suppression for liquid hydrocarbon pipeline systems in Canada and the US such as, but not limited to, NFPA codes and standards, Canadian Fire Codes, API 2000
  • Familiar knowledge of government regulatory and industry codes such as, but not limited to, CFR 195, CSA Z662, International Fire Code, API 650
  • Possess an aptitude for successfully building relationships with team members, internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in written form. Required to communicate technical issues to technical and non-technical staff
  • Fire Protection/Suppression certification is an asset (e.g., a NFPA Associate, Professional or Expert Level Certification)
