Our valued client, a large Oil & Gas company are seeking a Process & Technical Safety Engineer to join their team on a long term contract basis.
About the role:
Design/asset optimisation activities concentrate on unique topics (remotely guided by procedures or scarce precedents).
Undertakes process engineer/integrator role (depending on the project).
Translates the guidelines and standards into practice, and solves the more difficult technical challenges within the asset/internally and provides/assures technical recommendations which have a perceptible impact on local business performance; actively drives the identification, development and implementation of new technologies and opportunities to optimise field operations.
Contributes to the training and guidance of other professionals in the field.
May represent the Company externally as a subject matter expert with suppliers, customers and external agencies.
Is expected to work with minimal or no technical supervision.
May hold Technical Authority - Assures the integration across engineering disciplines to achieve delivery which is safe (all aspects of HSSE - personal/process safety and environment), fit for purpose and meeting cost-value optimisation.
Leads discipline team/tasks within design, operation, or maintenance of facilities/plant, interfacing with external stakeholders and managing contractors.
More likely to be responsible for a budget. Manages the relation with multiple (groups of) internal and external stakeholders on a tactical/strategic level and manages different interests to drive value for the company and its partners.
Requires careful stakeholder management from an impact and reputation perspective.

As a Process & Technical Safety Engineer, you are responsible for providing Process & Technical Safety Assurance for a portfolio of capital projects in a Refinery and Chemical plant Job
Description
• Able to perform PRV and PVSV sizing calculations. Strong knowledge of overpressure relief scenarios, Understanding of process of hydraulics. Working experience with design principles for flare systems.
• Lead and facilitate risk assessment sessions for project plant changes. Facilitation of workshops and studies, including Project PHAs, HAZIDs/HAZOPs, Facility Siting/Layout Studies, Bowties, LOPAs, HEMP (Hazard & Effect Management Process) and other process safety risk studies •
Providing guidance to EPC contractor on preparation of detailed equipment specifications.
• Provide technical assurance for process equipment safeguarding, pumps, tanks, pressure vessels etc.
• Provide technical assurance on the impairment of safeguarding devices
• Interpret, review and/or critique critical diagrams such as cause and effect, mechanical flow, piping, and instrumentation (P&ID) diagrams
• Provide assurance and guidance on Statement of Fitness-Pre-start-up Safety (SoF-PSSRs) for plant changes and projects.
• Identify and model Fire Explosion and Dispersion models using computer programs such as Fire Release Explosion and Dispersion (FRED, PHAST or equivalent).
• Provide technical guidance for specialty procedures for activities such as decontamination, O2 freeing, cool downs/warmups
• Experience with Fireproofing studies and assessments
• Experience with educating operations personnel on recognizing process safety hazards and barrier thinking/assurance. • Ability to authenticate the work of others following a thorough review.
• Facilitating knowledge sharing between executing projects, and the capture and implementation of lessons learned.
• Application of Human Factors, Operability and Maintainability standards.
• Process Safety Construction, commissioning, and startup support. Requirements • BSc in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
• 10+ Process Safety and/or Process Engineering experience in the Petroleum Refining, Upgrading and/or Petro-chemicals
• APEGA registered with Professional Engineering designation is a must
• Familiarity with process simulation software - Unisym, Hysis, Flarenet • Familiarity with dispersion and explosion modelling softwares
• Knowledge of relevant codes and standards, including API 520/521, API 537, API 754, ASME Sec VIII
• Strong facilitation and communication skills critical to success of role. • Strong stakeholder management skills
• Strong Leadership skills with the ability to motivate, coach, and values diversity Additional Information: Hybrid working available with minimum one day a week at clients plant location. Client might require more site present based on demand Location: Fort Saskatchewan, AB Industrial Area
