Senior Project Engineer (Steel Structural Package)

My client is seeking a Senior Project Engineer specializing in steel structures, for a large infrastructure project in Melbourne’s inner suburbs – handling a large scope for overhead structures. In this role, you’ll play a critical part in ensuring the successful execution of this road project. Your expertise in steel design, construction, and project management will be essential for delivering a safe, efficient, and high-quality infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

Structural Design and Analysis:
  • Collaborate with the design team to develop detailed steel structural plans, ensuring compliance with relevant codes, standards, and specifications
  • Perform structural analyses (static, dynamic, and fatigue) to validate design assumptions and optimize steel member sizes.
  • Evaluate constructability and feasibility of proposed designs.
Project Management:
  • Lead the steel package scope within the overall road project.
  • Develop project schedules, budgets, and resource plans specific to the steel structures.
  • Coordinate with other project stakeholders (civil engineers, contractors, architects) to integrate steel work seamlessly into the overall project timeline.
  • Monitor progress, identify risks, and implement mitigation strategies.
Procurement and Materials Management:
  • Specify steel materials, coatings, and fabrication requirements.
  • Collaborate with procurement teams to select suppliers and negotiate contracts.
  • Oversee material delivery, quality control, and inventory management.
Construction Oversight:
  • Supervise steel erection activities on-site.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and quality standards during fabrication and installation.
  • Address any design modifications or unforeseen challenges promptly.
Team Leadership and Collaboration:
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance.
  • Foster a collaborative environment by working closely with cross-functional teams.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field (Master’s preferred).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in structural engineering, with a focus on steel structures.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis software
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
A competitive day rate between $1300 – 1500 per day + super or GST is available and this role is initially for 6 months, with the likelihood to extend.
