Position: Insulation, Coating & PFP QA/QC Lead
Location: Afungi, Mozambique
Rotation: 28/28
Duration: 12 months renewable
Start date: December

The role
Reporting to the Site QA/QC Manager, you will be the Company focal point and senior technical authority for surface preparation, protective coating, thermal insulation (hot and cryogenic service) and passive fire protection (PFP). You will operate as a peer to the Welding and NDT QA/QC Leads and ensure that Contractors and Subcontractors comply with all Company, project and code requirements in these disciplines.

Key responsibilities
• Review and approve Contractor / Subcontractor quality plans, ITPs, application and installation procedures, and applicator qualification schemes for coating, insulation and PFP.
• Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (NACE/AMPP, ISO 12944, ISO 8501/8502, ISO 19840, SSPC, ASTM, UL 1709) and project cryogenic insulation specifications.
• Supervise all discipline inspection activities at site: surface preparation (cleanliness, profile, soluble salts, dust), environmental conditions (temperature, RH, dew point), WFT/DFT, adhesion and holiday testing.
• Oversee cryogenic and hot-service insulation installation (thickness, joint staggering, vapour and weather barriers, jacketing, banding, expansion joints).
• Oversee PFP application (substrate and primer compatibility, mesh reinforcement, thickness verification, curing, topcoat sealing) on structural steel and vessel skirts in defined fire zones.
• Manage the critical interfaces: paint-after-weld with the Welding QA/QC Lead, PFP-after-hydrotest with mechanical/commissioning teams, and coating-before-insulation sequencing.
• Verify applicator and inspector qualifications (NACE/AMPP CIP, BGAS-CSWIP, ICorr, manufacturer specific PFP training) and authorise only qualified personnel.
• Ensure material traceability, storage and shelf-life control for coating, insulation and PFP materials, including receipt inspection of manufacturer certificates and third-party fire test reports.
• Lead the resolution of technical queries and Non-Conformance Reports, including root cause analysis, corrective action plans and rework procedures.
• Champion HSE in discipline activities: chemical safety (isocyanates, epoxies, solvents), respiratory protection, confined-space spray application, blast-dust exposure, work at height and hot work near coated areas.
• Monitor discipline performance (surface preparation and DFT compliance rates, holiday and adhesion results, insulation rework, PFP thickness compliance), produce daily/weekly/monthly reports and feed project quality KPIs and lessons learnt.
• Support the use of digital coating and inspection tracking tools, ensuring data quality for commissioning integration and final dossier handover.

Qualifications/ Experience required
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Chemical, Materials, Mechanical or Corrosion preferred) or equivalent, with a post-qualification specialisation in QA/QC, Inspection, Corrosion, Coatings or PFP. Formal training in quality management systems is a plus.
  • Experience: Minimum 15 years in coating, insulation and/or PFP QA/QC, including at least 8 years in supervisory or lead roles on major Oil & Gas or LNG projects.
  • Certifications: NACE/AMPP CIP Level 2 or 3 (or BGAS-CSWIP Level 2/3) is mandatory. ICorr Insulation Inspector, PFP manufacturer-specific training (e.g. Chartek, Pitt-Char, Cafco, Nullifire) and CUI/Cathodic Protection qualifications are highly desirable.
  • Technical know-how: Cryogenic insulation systems (PIR/PUR, cellular glass, perlite), PFP systems (epoxy intumescent, cementitious), CUI and external stress corrosion cracking mitigation on stainless steel, and sequencing with welding and hydrotest.
  • Languages: Excellent written and spoken English. Portuguese or French is an asset.
  • Personal qualities: Recognised technical authority able to influence contractor practices; strong HSE leadership; continuous improvement mindset; clear communicator across multidisciplinary, multinational teams; prior IOC project experience and experience in sub-Saharan Africa are advantages.

Technical Requirements

1 Coating inspection certification
NACE/AMPP CIP Level 2 or Level 3, or BGAS-CSWIP Level 2/3 painting inspection – mandatory, in date.
Minimum entry ticket to act as senior QA/QC authority over Contractor CIP Level 1/2 inspectors at Afungi.

2 15 / 8 years' experience ≥15 years in coating, insulation and/or
PFP QA/QC, incl. ≥8 years in supervisory or lead roles in Oil & Gas. Lead position, peer to Welding and NDT QA/QC Leads, on a $-multibillion two-train LNG EPC with a 15,000- person site peak.

3 Cryogenic insulation expertise
Hands-on QA/QC of cryogenic insulation systems (PIR/PUR, cellular glass, perlite), incl. vapour-barrier and sealing continuity. LNG trains, LNG/condensate tankage and cryogenic piping are the core of the onshore scope – this is the differentiating requirement vs. a standard coating inspector.

4 Passive Fire Protection systems
QA/QC of epoxy intumescent, cementitious and subliming PFP (UL 1709 / ASTM E1529 fire-tested systems); manufacturer training (Chartek, Pitt-Char, Cafco, Nullifire) preferred.
PFP on structural steel and vessel skirts in defined fire zones; PFP-after hydrotest sequencing at system completion.

5 Surface preparation & coating standards
Working command of ISO 8501/8502 (incl. 8502-3/4/6/9), SSPC-SP series, NACE SP0198/SP0188, ISO 12944, ISO 19840 / SSPC-PA 2, ASTM D4541/D4417.
Governs review of Contractor ITPs and daily hold/witness inspections (blast grade, profile, salts, dew point, WFT/DFT, adhesion, holiday).

6 CUI / ESCC mitigation on stainless steel
Experience specifying and inspecting coating under insulation on stainless steel to prevent Corrosion Under Insulation and External Stress Corrosion Cracking; NACE CUI qualification valued.
Critical service on LNG process piping; a known integrity risk for coated-the insulated systems in a hot, humid coastal environment.

7 Interface & sequencing management
Proven management of paint-after-weld, coating-before-insulation and PFP-afterhydrotest interfaces with welding, mechanical and commissioning teams.
Surface works must not become a critical-path constraint at system completion; direct interface with Welding QA/QC Lead and Discipline Superintendents.

8 Contractor QMS oversight & NCR management
Review/approval of quality plans, ITPs, manufacturer TDS/MRAP) and applicator qualification schemes; leading NCR root cause analysis and corrective action on EPC contracts.
Company-side assurance role over EPC Contractor and Subcontractors; contributes to Company audit programme and Lessons Learnt.

9 Material traceability & chemical safety
Control of paint batches, curing agents, shelf life, storage conditions, third-party fire test reports; HSE leadership on isocyanates, epoxies, solvents, confined space spraying, blast dust.
Remote-site logistics make storage/shelf-life control and receipt inspection critical; chemical safety is a top HSE exposure of the discipline.

10 Data-driven reporting & digital tools
Production of daily/weekly/monthly discipline reports and KPIs (DFT compliance, holiday rates, adhesion pass/fail, PFP thickness, insulation rework); proficiency with coating tracking and DFT data-logging platforms.
Feeds project quality KPI dashboards, Cost of Quality tracking and Final Dossier handover to commissioning.
