Position Title: JS.LIB.022 Reference Librarian
Grade: NJS 07

The National Judicial Staff Services (NJSS) has initiated a major organisational restructure to strengthen its workforce and enhance the delivery of efficient, effective, and quality support services to the Judiciary and courts throughout Papua New Guinea. We invite suitably qualified, experienced, and motivated Papua New Guineans to apply for the position of Reference Librarian within the Library unit based in Waigani.

Role Overview:

The Reference Librarian supports the Manager - Library & Archives, by focusing on providing expert assistance in legal research, navigating legal databases, and accessing a wide array of legal materials. This position aims to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of legal research and ensure that up-to-date legal resources are accessible to judges, lawyers, legal officers, court staff, and law enthusiasts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct legal research and offer guidance on using legal databases and resources.
  • Develop and conduct training sessions on legal research methods and database usage.
  • Evaluate and select new legal materials to update and expand the library's collections.
  • Collaborate on digital library projects to enhance access to electronic resources.
  • Provide on-demand research assistance and consultations for complex legal queries.
  • Manage subscriptions and access to online legal databases and journals.
  • Maintain an organized and accessible physical and digital collection of legal materials.
  • Participate in professional development to stay current with legal research tools and trends.
  • Liaise with judicial and legal professionals to understand and serve their information needs.
  • Contribute to library policy development and service planning to improve user experiences.
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • Diploma in Legal Studies.
  • Minimum of 3 years in a legal research or law library setting.
  • Expertise in legal research databases and resources.
  • Strong instructional and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in information technology and e-library systems.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Attention to detail and precision.
  • Proactive and service-oriented attitude.
Preferred
  • Degree in Law or Information Science.
  • 3 years or more experience in a similar role.
This Reference Librarian role requires sound judgement, adaptability, and a consistent commitment to professional service. The successful applicant will be expected to meet the role's operational demands, including adapting to rapid changes in legal information technology and ensuring the library’s resources remain relevant and accessible in both physical and digital formats.
