Position Title: JS.SAM.032 Senior Interpreter - Team A
Grade: NJS 12
The National Judicial Staff Services (NJSS) has initiated a major organisational restructure to strengthen its workforce and enhance the delivery of efficient, effective, and quality support services to the Judiciary and courts throughout Papua New Guinea. We invite suitably qualified, experienced, and motivated Papua New Guineans to apply for the position of Senior Interpreter - Team A within the Courtroom Services unit based in Waigani.
Role Overview:
The Senior Interpreter - Team A plays a pivotal role in the Courtroom Services unit of the Supreme and National court of Papua New Guinea, ensuring linguistic accuracy and cultural sensitivity in all interpretations. This position bridges communication barriers, enabling clear and effective participation for all court participants, regardless of language. The role is essential for upholding the justice system's integrity by facilitating equal access and understanding in legal proceedings. Supreme Court Act. National Court Act. Sheriff Act. Supreme Court Rules. National Court Rules. Practice Directions.
Key Responsibilities
  • Interpret spoken communications accurately and impartially in court proceedings.
  • Ensure understanding and cultural nuances are conveyed correctly.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all interpreted information.
  • Collaborate with court personnel to ensure smooth courtroom operations.
  • Prepare for court sessions by reviewing case files and legal terminology.
  • Provide feedback for the continuous improvement of interpretation services.
  • Manage and organize interpretation resources and tools.
  • Act as a liaison for communication between non-English speakers and the court.
  • Document interpretation services provided for records and quality assurance.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor in Linguistic.
  • 4 or more years of professional interpreting experience, preferably in a legal or courtroom setting.
  • Sufficient familiarity with legal terminology and courtroom procedures.
  • Comprehensive understanding of cultural nuances and ethical standards in interpretation.
  • Advanced knowledge in a range of languages relevant to the court's needs, including rare and indigenous languages.
  • Exceptional linguistic skills in multiple languages.
  • Strong ethical judgment and professionalism.

Preferred
  • Degree in Linguistics, Translation Studies, or related field of study.
  • Proven experience in leading a team of interpreters in a judicial setting.
