Position Title: JS.SAM.038 Interpreter
Grade: NJS 08

The National Judicial Staff Services (NJSS) has initiated a major organisational restructure to strengthen its workforce and enhance the delivery of efficient, effective, and quality support services to the Judiciary and courts throughout Papua New Guinea. We invite suitably qualified, experienced, and motivated Papua New Guineans to apply for the position of Interpreter within the Courtroom Services unit based in Waigani.

Role Overview:
The Interpreter serves as a linguistic bridge in the Courtroom Services unit of the Supreme and National Court of Papua New Guinea, providing accurate and culturally sensitive interpretation. This role is crucial for enabling clear and effective communication for all court participants, facilitating their full engagement in legal proceedings. The position supports the justice system's integrity by ensuring equal access and comprehension for individuals of diverse language backgrounds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide quality accurate and timely interpretation services during court proceedings.
  • Ensure interpretations are culturally sensitive, respecting the backgrounds of all participants.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all information obtained in the course of duty.
  • Prepare for court sessions by reviewing case materials and legal terminology.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Interpreter to align interpretation strategies and standards.
  • Provide clear and effective communication between court officials and participants.
  • Adapt quickly to different dialects and legal jargon as required.
  • Document interpretation services provided for records and quality assurance.
  • Continuously improve linguistic skills and legal knowledge.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • Diploma in Language & Communication.
  • At least 3 years of professional interpreting experience, with preference given to those with courtroom or legal setting experience.
  • Familiarity with legal procedures and terminology.
  • Understanding of cultural nuances and their importance in communication.
  • Proficiency in at least two languages used in the court's jurisdiction, including indigenous languages.
  • Exceptional linguistic and interpretive skills.
  • Strong understanding of cultural sensitivities.
  • Excellent listening and note-taking skill.

  • Confidentiality.
Preferred
  • Certification in Legal Interpretation or related field of study.
  • Experience in interpreting in a similar setting.
