Environment Specialist – Champion Environmental Stewardship in Asset Retirement

Are you passionate about protecting the environment while supporting complex industrial operations? Join our client’s dynamic Asset Retirement HSE Team on Barrow Island as an Environment Specialist and play a critical role in guiding and safeguarding environmental performance throughout decommissioning, remediation, well abandonment, and associated asset retirement activities. Reporting to the HSE Team Lead, you will deliver hands-on environmental expertise to ensure compliance, risk management, and continuous improvement, all while applying Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles to foster sustainable success.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide practical environmental guidance and support across Asset Retirement operations and projects.
  • Conduct field-based environmental assurance, verification, and validation activities.
  • Lead environmental monitoring and sampling (air, water, waste, soil), waste management, and fauna handling efforts.
  • Develop and deliver environmental training, awareness initiatives, and leadership programs.
  • Participate in projects and cross-functional working groups focused on environmental risk and waste management, contaminated land, rehabilitation, and improvement initiatives.
  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with HSE teams, project stakeholders, regulators, and contractors.
  • Serve as a vital member of the Incident Management and Emergency Response Team, including fulfilling roles such as Environment Unit Lead and wildlife response focal point.
  • Facilitate thorough incident investigations using company methodologies like 5-Why, SAFE, Why-Tree, and Learning Teams.
  • Support environmental regulatory approvals, compliance, audits, and reporting related to Asset Retirement activities.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Diploma or Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in applying environmental management systems and environmental risk management in practical settings.
  • Strong ability to influence without formal authority and foster trusted relationships across diverse teams, contractors, and regulators.
  • Exceptional communication skills, adaptable to different audiences, to effectively drive environmental performance and workforce engagement.
  • Hands-on experience in field environmental assurance, emergency and oil spill response, fauna handling, environmental monitoring and sampling, contaminated land management, and incident investigation.
Nice to Have:
  • Experience supporting major projects, decommissioning, remediation, construction, or operational activities.
  • Familiarity with Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles.
  • Previous exposure to environmental leadership programs and continuous improvement initiatives.
Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Environmental qualification at Diploma or Degree level.
  • Relevant experience in environmental roles within the oil, gas, or related industrial sectors.
  • Demonstrated track record in environmental compliance, risk management, and on-site support in complex operational environments.
Other Requirements:
  • 14/14 roster schedule.
  • Contract duration: 2 years.
  • Participation in emergency response exercises and potential travel to field sites.
  • Certifications related to environmental health and safety or emergency response would be advantageous.
