Geotechnical Engineer – Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) Project

About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Geotechnical Engineer to support a major tailings storage facility (TSF) project within a large-scale mining operation. This role will provide technical expertise across geotechnical investigations, dam safety, monitoring systems, slope and embankment performance, and risk management activities associated with tailings infrastructure. Working closely with operations, projects, and technical services teams, the successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring geotechnical integrity, supporting construction activities, monitoring asset performance, and driving safe and sustainable outcomes throughout the project lifecycle. This position suits a hands-on engineer with strong field exposure and experience working within remote mining or large infrastructure environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide geotechnical support for tailings storage facilities, embankments, dams, and associated infrastructure.
  • Monitor and assess TSF performance, stability, and operational risks.
  • Support design reviews, construction oversight, and quality assurance activities for geotechnical works.
  • Review and interpret field investigation data including drilling, instrumentation, and monitoring outputs.
  • Assist with geotechnical assessments including slope stability, seepage, settlement, and ground behaviour analysis.
  • Develop and maintain monitoring programs for geotechnical assets and critical infrastructure.
  • Manage and interpret instrumentation systems including piezometers, inclinometers, survey monitoring, and telemetry platforms.
  • Support dam safety inspections and compliance with internal and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports, risk assessments, and engineering recommendations.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including mining, civil, construction, operations, and environmental personnel.
  • Participate in field inspections and provide technical guidance during construction and operational activities.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives relating to geotechnical monitoring and TSF management practices.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Degree qualification in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geological Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting Tailings Storage Facilities (TSF), earth structures, dams, or mining infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of geotechnical principles related to embankments, foundations, slope stability, and soil/rock mechanics.
  • Experience with geotechnical investigation programs and interpretation of field and laboratory data.
  • Experience working with geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring systems.
  • Strong capability in telemetry systems, including remote monitoring platforms, data acquisition systems, sensor integration, and interpretation of live geotechnical monitoring data.
  • Exposure to dam safety management frameworks and risk-based assessments.
  • Experience with monitoring systems such as piezometers, inclinometers, survey prisms, vibrating wire instruments, settlement monitoring, and associated technologies.
  • Familiarity with geotechnical software and analysis tools.
  • Ability to review technical drawings, reports, and engineering documentation.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage with both technical and operational stakeholders.
  • Ability to work autonomously in remote and site-based environments.
Highly Regarded
  • Previous experience on TSF construction, lift projects, or dam raising activities.
  • Exposure to mine site water management and seepage control systems.
  • Experience implementing or managing telemetry and real-time monitoring networks.
  • Understanding of industry standards and governance frameworks relating to tailings and dam safety.
  • Experience in remote FIFO or international mining environments.
What We're Looking For We are seeking a proactive and technically capable engineer who can combine strong geotechnical fundamentals with practical site experience. The successful candidate will be comfortable working across both field and office environments and have a strong focus on safety, collaboration, and operational excellence.
