Technical Due Diligence Expert

Our client are a leading producer in renewable energy and are seeking a Technical Due Diligence Expert to support the growth of its biogas and biomethane portfolio across Europe. This role focuses on agricultural feedstock‑based projects and plays a key part in shaping investment, acquisition, and development decisions.

Role Overview

The Technical Due Diligence Expert is responsible for delivering comprehensive technical assessments of biogas and biomethane projects throughout their lifecycle. The position supports strategic investments by providing robust technical, operational, and risk analyses across multiple European markets.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Due Diligence & Project Assessment
  • Conduct technical due diligence for acquisitions, joint ventures, and greenfield biogas and biomethane projects
  • Review and validate process designs, plant layouts, mass and energy balances, and process flow diagrams
  • Assess anaerobic digestion technologies, feedstock handling systems, biogas upgrading solutions, digestate treatment, and grid injection systems
  • Identify key technical risks, mitigation strategies, and value‑creation opportunities
Engineering & Plant Optimisation
  • Evaluate feedstock availability, composition, and long‑term supply robustness
  • Analyse plant performance, efficiency, reliability, and scalability, including repowering or expansion opportunities
  • Review compliance with relevant technical standards, safety requirements, and environmental regulations
  • Support optimisation of CAPEX and OPEX assumptions based on technical findings
Transaction & Investment Support
  • Provide technical input to investment committees, M&A processes, and financial models
  • Prepare structured technical due diligence reports and executive summaries
  • Respond to technical questions during transactions, including data room reviews and management presentations
  • Support post‑acquisition integration and development of technical improvement roadmaps
Stakeholder & Supplier Management
  • Interface with technology providers, EPC contractors, operators, consultants, and regulatory authorities
  • Validate supplier proposals, performance guarantees, and cost assumptions
  • Collaborate closely with development, finance, legal, and operations teams
Market & Regulatory Intelligence
  • Monitor developments in biogas and biomethane technologies, regulation, and sustainability frameworks across Europe
  • Contribute to internal best practices, technical standards, and knowledge sharing

Required Experience and Qualifications


Education
  • Master’s degree in Energy Engineering, Renewable Energy, Environmental Engineering, Chemical, Mechanical or Agricultural Engineering, Agronomy, or a related discipline
Professional Experience
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in technical due diligence, project development, or engineering within the biogas or biomethane sector
  • Proven exposure to European projects, particularly agricultural feedstock‑based plants
  • Experience gained in consulting, energy companies, project developers, or investment organisations is highly advantageous
Technical Expertise
  • Strong knowledge of anaerobic digestion processes and biogas upgrading technologies
  • Understanding of agricultural supply chains, feedstock logistics, and sustainability requirements
  • Familiarity with project development stages from feasibility through construction and operation
  • Ability to translate technical assessments into commercial and financial implications

  • Clear communicator across technical and non‑technical stakeholders
  • Structured, detail‑oriented, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Commercially minded with a pragmatic, solution‑focused approach

Languages
  • Fluent English (written and spoken)
  • Additional European languages (e.g. Italian, Spanish, Polish) are an advantage
Location
  • Flexible within Europe, with willingness to travel for site visits and project assessments
