Role: Contract Protection Engineer – High Voltage | Power & Renewables 

Location: Perth, CBD
Rate: $80–$90 per hour + Superannuation | 45‑hour week
Length: 12‑Month Contract (High Likelihood of Extension to 2029)

An excellent opportunity has arisen for an early‑career Protection Engineer to join a major Western Australian organisation delivering large‑scale transmission, power generation, and renewable energy projects. This role is ideally suited to an early-career engineer who is looking to accelerate their technical development across both design and commissioning activities. 

About the Role Working within a specialist Protection & Controls engineering team, you will support the development and delivery of protection systems across multiple 220kV/33kV substations and associated generation assets, including wind, solar and battery energy storage systems. Responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to protection system design, including grading studies, protection settings and functional design documentation. 
  • Reviewing engineering drawings, specifications and technical scopes across high‑voltage infrastructure projects. 
  • Producing configuration files and IED settings, with experience in 
  • Supporting FAT testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and ensuring correct configuration of protection relays (including IEC 61850 MMS/GOOSE protocols).
  • Working closely with internal and external stakeholders to integrate protection requirements into broader project plans. 
This position offers a good blend of technical design (approx. 50%) and field commissioning exposure (approx. 50%), providing an excellent platform for long‑term career development in HV protection engineering.

Candidate Profile The ideal candidate will bring:

  • 2 + years' experience in the power industry, preferably within utilities, mining, or HV commissioning/testing environments. 
  • Capability in protection settings, coordination calculations and interpreting protection system requirements.
  • Bachelor of Electrical Engineering or equivalent. 
  • Strong communication, documentation and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience with HV systems (33kV and above), cable drawings, earthing studies and load calculations. 
This role would particularly suit an engineer progressing early in their career who is eager to gain exposure to major energy infrastructure projects on a long‑term program of work.

Contract & Outlook This is a 12‑month hourly‑rate contract based in Perth’s CBD The project portfolio extends well into the future, with a strong likelihood of continuation through to 2029.
