Job Title: Engineer IV
Location: Edmonton or Calgary, AB
Length: 1 year (with potential extension)
Rotation: 3 days in office (Mon/Tues/Thurs) and 2 days remote (Wed/Friday)
 
Role Summary
Provides senior‑level civil engineering expertise for trenchless crossings and civil works supporting capital projects. Acts as a subject matter expert in trenchless construction methods. Including horizontal directional drilling, micro‑tunnelling, auger boring, and direct pipe. As well as civil and structural installations such as foundations, concrete works, structural supports, earthworks, and survey.
 
Supports interpretation of design documents, field execution, construction issue resolution, and alignment with safety, integrity, and engineering excellence. Contributes to the stewardship and continuous improvement of civil and trenchless construction standards.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for civil, structural, and trenchless engineering across capital projects.
  • Provide technical support for design and construction, including feasibility assessments, constructability reviews, ground condition evaluations, and civil risk assessments for early‑stage project development.
  • Support project teams through drawing reviews, RFIs, technical deviations, and change requests.
  • Maintain compliance with corporate quality and technical standards, as well as applicable industry standards.
  • Lead continuous improvement of civil and structural engineering standards, construction guidelines, and procedures.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to enhance organizational understanding of civil and structural construction activities.
  • Identify and support technical investigations, failure analyses, and trials of new methods, materials, or technologies.
  • Contribute to safety and wellness culture through required training and participation in safety initiatives.
  • Communicate complex technical information clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support corporate values of safety, integrity, respect, and high performance.
 
Role Scope
  • Exercises significant independent judgment and discretion when performing technical work within areas of expertise.
  • Provides recommendations with broad implications for project execution, cost, and long‑term system performance, often without the ability to fully validate solutions prior to implementation.
  • Provides technical stewardship for a large civil and trenchless infrastructure asset base where constructability, ground interaction, and long‑term integrity are critical.
  • Leverages professional network and industry relationships to support high‑quality engineering decisions.
 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline from a recognized institution.
  • Registered or pursuing registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in one or more Canadian provinces, preferably Alberta.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience in civil and trenchless crossing construction.
  • Ability to assess and resolve performance issues related to civil and structural construction while balancing technical, business, risk, and financial considerations.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply risk‑based approaches to complex civil and trenchless engineering challenges.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to contribute to strategic planning and lead change.
  • Proven ability to influence, prioritize, and manage multiple assignments while meeting deadlines and stakeholder expectations.
  • Strong critical thinking skills related to engineering reliability and practical implementation.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for interaction with peers, internal stakeholders, and external partners.
  • Experience contributing to standards development, technical governance, or industry working groups related to trenchless and civil construction.
  • Owner‑operator or field‑based experience supporting trenchless construction, investigations, or failure analysis.
 
Working Conditions
  • Approximately 90% office‑based and 10% in field, shop, or operating facilities, including outdoor environments in varying weather conditions.
  • Air travel within Canada and the U.S., with occasional local travel using company or rental vehicles (10–20%).
  • May involve work near moving mechanical equipment.
  • Occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions (non‑weather), airborne particles, electrical hazards, vibration, and noise levels exceeding 90 dBA.
