Job Title: Process Safety Engineer
Location: Fort Saskatchewan, AB
Length: 1-2 years
Rotation: 3 days in office (Mon/Tues/Thurs) and 2 days remote (Wed/Friday)
 
Role Summary
The Process Safety Engineer provides senior-level technical expertise in process safety engineering for the Scotford Energy & Chemicals Park. This role supports safe, reliable, and compliant operations across one of Canada’s largest integrated energy and chemicals facilities. The position delivers technical assurance, leads risk assessments, and partners with Operations and Engineering to strengthen barrier management and process safety performance. May lead technical initiatives, workshops, or small project teams.
 
Key Responsibilities:
 
Provide Technical Process Safety Leadership
  • Deliver technical assurance for PRV/PVSV sizing and relief scenario evaluations.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of hydraulics and flare system design.
  • Guide EPC partners in developing accurate and compliant equipment specifications.
  • Review and critique P&IDs, mechanical flow diagrams, and cause-and-effect matrices.
  • Provide technical assurance across pumps, vessels, tanks, and safeguarding systems.
 
Lead Hazard Reviews and Risk Assessments
  • Facilitate HAZIDs, HAZOPs, LOPAs, SIL assessments, and other risk-based workshops.
  • Lead 5‑year unit HAZOP revalidations and project PHAs.
  • Evaluate safety instrumented functions, including SIF summing and safety layer performance.
  • Apply HEMP and other process safety methodologies to ensure robust risk management.
  • Support Management of Change (MOC) reviews and project risk workshops.
 
Perform Advanced Modelling and Scenario Analysis
  • Conduct fire, explosion, and dispersion modelling using tools such as FRED or PHAST.
  • Identify credible scenarios and develop meaningful risk insights.
 
Engage with Operations and Strengthen Barrier Management
  • Partner with Operations, Engineering, and Project teams to enhance process safety performance.
  • Coach operations personnel on process safety hazards and barrier effectiveness.
  • Provide practical recommendations to improve operational safety outcomes.
 
Deliver Reporting and Senior Leadership Assurance
  • Prepare comprehensive reports summarizing findings, recommendations, and action plans.
  • Present ALARP assessments and risk tolerability results to senior leadership.
 
Drive Continuous Improvement
  • Promote lessons learned and best practices across site and project teams.
  • Apply human factors, operability, and maintainability principles to improve design quality.
 
Role Scope
  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulations, codes, standards, and industry best practices.
  • Provides senior technical leadership to support safe, reliable, and efficient operations.
  • Contributes to risk management, incident learning, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Influences stakeholders on technical and risk‑related decisions with minimal oversight.
 
Qualifications
  • BSc in Chemical, Mechanical, or related Engineering discipline.
  • 7+ years of experience in Process Safety or Process Engineering within refining, upgrading, or petrochemicals.
  • Minimum 3 years of HAZOP/LOPA facilitation experience.
  • Functional Safety certification considered an asset.
  • Experience with UniSim, HYSYS, and Flarenet.
  • Experience with dispersion/explosion modelling tools (PHAST, FRED, or equivalent).
  • Strong knowledge of key codes and standards: API 520/521, API 537, API 754, ASME Sec VIII.
  • Excellent facilitation, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to work effectively in cross‑functional teams.
