Background
The client is a leading data centre developer and operator that entered the Malaysian market to address the growing demand for digital infrastructure across Southeast Asia. NES Fircroft was initially engaged on a contingent basis to support Phase 1 of their project, but following strong early results, the partnership evolved into an exclusive arrangement for subsequent construction phases.
The Challenge
The client’s project involved delivering a 150MW hyperscale data centre in Johor, executed across multiple construction stages. To meet construction milestones, the business needed to rapidly scale project and operational teams, however, there was limited availability of experienced talent within the local market.
The client had no established local recruitment infrastructure, leaving them reliant on external support to mobilise personnel to site. Their internal team was already overstretched, and existing recruitment agencies were failing to provide high-quality candidates.
As a new data centre operator entering a competitive and fast-moving market, the client needed a reliable partner capable of sourcing and securing the right talent quickly and effectively.
Our Solution
NES Fircroft was able to support the client thanks to its strong presence in Malaysia, specialist expertise in data centre recruitment, and access to a pre-qualified talent network across the region and globally. Our experience in delivering mission-critical projects throughout Asia-Pacific meant we could move beyond transactional recruitment and act as a true delivery partner, fully aligned with project outcomes.
Initially engaged on a contingent basis, we deployed specialist data centre recruitment consultants in Malaysia to support Phase 1 delivery. As demand grew, we introduced a structured and scalable recruitment solution tailored to the construction phases. This approach ensured consistency, transparency, and reduced delivery risk.
To achieve this, we provided:
- Dedicated account management supported by regular stakeholder meetings.
- Workforce planning aligned with construction milestones.
- Targeted market mapping across data centres and adjacent mission-critical sectors.
- Structured candidate screening and delivery of shortlists.
- A mix of contract and permanent hires; most senior hires brought direct data centre experience, while less senior and supporting roles were sourced from sectors such as oil & gas, semiconductor manufacturing, and medical device production.
- A workforce composed of local Malaysian professionals, and select expatriate specialists mobilised from Singapore, Australia, Europe, and India for niche roles.
- Full assignment and mobilisation support, including payroll management for contract hires, work permit and visa coordination for expatriates, medical examinations and insurance coverage, travel coordination, ongoing contractor and compliance monitoring - allowing the client to remain focused on construction and operational delivery whilst we managed workforce logistics and administration.
Key roles recruited included:
- BMS Engineer
- Chargeman Engineers
- Critical Facilities Engineers (Electrical & Mechanical)
- EHS Manages & Officers
- IT Infrastructure & Network Specialists
- Operations Directors & Facilities Managers
- Physical Security Managers
- Project Managers & Construction Managers

From start to finish, NES Fircroft managed the entire recruitment lifecycle, including role scoping and workforce planning with project leadership, candidate sourcing and technical assessment, interview coordination and offer management, phased onboarding aligned with construction stages, and ongoing hiring reports for pipeline visibility.
The Results
Over a period of approximately two years, NES Fircroft successfully delivered more than 70 hires across three construction stages on an exclusive partnership basis. Our comprehensive approach delivered speed, scalability, and continuity.
Through this collaboration, the client secured a reliable and scalable recruitment solution that not only enabled one of Malaysia’s most significant data centre developments but also laid the foundation for long-term regional growth.
