Background
The client is a global hyperscale data centre developer and operator, with rapid expansion plans across Asia Pacific to meet growing demand for cloud and digital infrastructure. NES Fircroft was initially engaged to hire a senior role for its Hong Kong operations. What began as a single hire has since evolved into a broader, multi-country partnership, with NES Fircroft supporting the client for more than 18 months.
The Challenge
Operating from Hong Kong, the local data centre talent market was highly competitive and relatively immature, with a limited pool of professionals offering experience in large-scale, multi-redundancy, mission-critical facilities. Strong competition created a high risk of counter-offers and salary inflation.
Although the client had an internal talent acquisition function and existing agency relationships, these channels struggled to consistently deliver suitable shortlists for senior and niche roles. The complexity of these positions, combined with compliance, safety, and regional mobility considerations, exceeded the capacity of generalist recruitment partners.
Our Solution
NES Fircroft has a global office footprint, including a vast network across Asia Pacific and demonstrable data centre staffing experience from supporting projects across Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, and Taiwan. This enabled us to advise not only on talent identification and workforce planning, but also on market dynamics, mobility, and hiring strategy.
We deployed a dedicated delivery team in Hong Kong, supported by regional consultants across North Asia. An account manager became the single point of contact, ensuring consistency in delivery, reporting, and stakeholder communication.
- We delivered targeted market mapping across data centres and adjacent industries, identifying transferable skillsets from pharmaceutical manufacturing, clean-room environments, hospitals, airports, and other regulated operations.
- Leveraging both our international and local markets: we primarily engaged Hong Kong talent, supplemented by select expatriates from Singapore, Australia, and Europe, increasing the client's talent access by 25%.
- Alongside orchestrating interview logistics, we ran technical and behavioural assessments for in-depth screening, followed by detailed shortlist presentations, and ongoing compensation and counter-offer advice, informed by live market data.
- We supported expatriate hires with work permit coordination, medical checks, insurance guidance, and relocation logistics, ensuring full compliance with local regulations.
- Post-placement follow-ups helped to ensure smooth onboarding into the client's working environment.
Key roles recruited included:
- Critical Facilities Engineers (Electrical and Mechanical)
- Data Centre Operations Managers
- EHS Managers
- Regional EHS Director
The Results
NES Fircroft successfully placed a Regional EHS Director in Hong Kong and subsequently delivered a further eight permanent hires across critical facilities, EHS, and operations roles.
- Our methodology enabled us to deliver senior-role shortlists in as little as 20 days, resulting in a 15–20% reduction in the client’s time-to-hire.
- Our comprehensive screening and effective candidate management meant we received a candidate acceptance rate of 85%.
As the client scaled across Asia-Pacific, we also recruited for facilities in Japan and Taiwan, leveraging our established local teams and compliance expertise. What began as a single-hire engagement has now evolved into a trusted, multi-country partnership.
Thanks to consistent delivery quality, deep market insight, and strong regional coverage, NES Fircroft is now regarded as a preferred specialist supplier for data centre hiring across Asia-Pacific.
