Automation Skills Shortages In The Mining Sector

Our client is a global leader in the iron ore industry, recognised for their culture, innovation and industry-leading development of world class infrastructure and mining assets in the Pilbara, Western Australia.

The Challenge

NES has been a preferred supplier to the client since 2018; our client’s operations are vast and require an ongoing supply of talented personnel to ensure that targets are delivered at all stages of a project across Western Australia.

In a shift to increase mine site automation, our client urgently required a team of Automation Systems Engineers. Mining automation is a fast paced industry and is relatively new to the Perth market. The desired candidates needed to be fast learners and adaptable to suit such a busy environment, and needed very specific C++ lifecycle development experience, which is a niche market of its own.

The Solution

A dedicated team from our Perth office used their established industry networks to comprehensively map the market, including looking at competitor companies across the country in order to target qualified but passive talent. At all times our team was discrete and discussed the available roles with transparency to build rapport and trust with the prospective candidates, including those considering leaving competitor companies for this opportunity. 

Our experienced consultants and assignment support teams handled all logistical requirements efficiently, to ensure that contractors were supported throughout their onboarding and mobilisation, and could begin working compliantly.

We demonstrated flexible processes to overcome logistical barriers, for example, one candidate was based in Brisbane, so our consultants managed the entire process via phone and video calls. Our assignment support team also organised the candidate’s transport and accommodation whilst in Perth.

Thorough interviews, reference processes, medical and police checks were undertaken to ensure only quality candidates were presented to the client.

Through managing the recruitment, onboarding and mobilisation process we made sure that the candidates’ experience was seamless, avoiding any logistical headaches for the client.

The Results

Our extensive market mapping and sourcing processes meant that all three shortlisted candidates were successfully placed onto the project. All three candidates have performed to a very high standard; one has been taken on permanently by the client and the other two are set to follow suit in the coming months.
