The Automation Field Engineer bridges engineering deliverables and field execution by implementing and commissioning automation systems in oil and gas facilities. This role is responsible for executing approved automation designs through programming, installation support, testing, and startup activities while ensuring compliance with company standards, safety processes, and operational requirements.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIESSupport automation engineering design, implementation, and continuous improvement initiatives.Develop, program, test, and commission PLCs, RTUs, and HMIs in alignment with engineeringstandards.Execute field installation, startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting of automation controlsystems.Install, calibrate, and troubleshoot field instrumentation including transmitters, switches, controlvalves, and analyzers.Configure and troubleshoot field communications including Ethernet, serial, radio, cellular, andsatellite networks supporting automation systems.Troubleshoot and support low-voltage power systems (≤480V) related to automation equipment andcoordinate with electrical teams as needed.Promote and uphold a strong safety culture, ensuring all work is executed in compliance withcompany safety policies and regulatory requirements.Maintain compliance with Management of Change (MOC) and Pre-Startup Safety Review (PSSR)processes.Review, redline, and update engineering documents including P&IDs, Cause & Effects, and wiringdiagrams.Support operations teams with system optimization, training, and issue resolution.Ensure automation systems meet alarm management and operational standards.Coordinate closely with Automation Engineering, Construction, Operations, and third-party vendorsto ensure successful project execution and system performance.Support new technology evaluations and apply learnings to field implementations.Participate in project tracking, reporting, and lessons learned activities.Maintain communication with internal stakeholders, vendors, and field personnel.4. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND COMPETENCIESBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.5 years of experience in oil and gas automation.2 years of experience in field commissioning, or controls engineering.Advanced proficiency in PLC programming using Allen‑Bradley platforms, including PlantPAx systems,and HMI development using FactoryTalk View SE/ME.
Strong experience in field implementation and commissioning activities including loop checks,functional testing, and system startup validation.Ability to troubleshoot and resolve control system issues under live operating conditions.Strong troubleshooting skills across control systems, networking, and instrumentation.Working knowledge of oil and gas production processes and facility operations.Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols and networks including Ethernet/IP,Modbus, serial, and wireless systems.Understanding of MOC, PSSR, and industry standards (API, NEC, ISA).Ability to work in field environments including travel, on-call rotations, and extended hours.Strong communication and teamwork skills with ability to support both engineering and operations.Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with ability to work under pressure.Effective communication skills across field personnel, engineering, and operations teams.Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple activities in a fast-paced field environment.Proficiency in MS Office and automation software tools.
