Role Summary
The Contract Health & Safety (H&S) Advisor provides subject matter expertise and drives the consistent application of policies, standards, and procedures at the field level. This role acts as a key H&S leader, advancing strategy, offering guidance, and supporting execution teams.
The Advisor is a role model who promotes a strong safety culture while building and maintaining collaborative, team-focused relationships critical to operational success.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide direct support to execution teams in interpreting applicable OHS legislation, industry standards and practices, Cenovus H&S program components, and worker training requirements.
- Act as an authority and coach on Cenovus programs, processes, and standards.
- Support implementation of H&S strategy, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities.
- Participate in the review of project-specific safety documentation and contractor performance meetings.
- Ensure H&S planning aligns with business strategy and growth plans.
- Coach, influence, motivate, and empower internal and external stakeholders regarding H&S ownership.
- Communicate timely and relevant H&S information to appropriate stakeholders.
- Steward safe performance through the Cenovus Operational Integrity Management System (COIMS) and related requirements.
- Support development and sustainability of H&S capability programs tailored to field operations.
- Collaborate across the organization to share best practices, lessons learned, and improve knowledge management.
- Monitor emerging H&S trends and legislative changes; ensure assets remain compliant and up to date.
Role Scope
- Supports compliance with H&S legislation, corporate standards, and industry best practices.
- Provides leadership and direction to influence safe work practices across operations and projects.
- Drives continuous improvement in safety performance and organizational capability.
- Builds strong partnerships with stakeholders to support operational excellence.
Qualifications
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Minimum of 5+ years of experience in the Oil & Gas industry, preferably within Major Projects and H&S functions.
- Post-secondary or professional H&S certification (e.g., NCSO, CRSP, CRST).
- Strong technical knowledge of Health & Safety management systems.
- Willingness and ability to gain in-depth knowledge of Cenovus H&S standards, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to make decisions under tight timelines and manage competing priorities.
- Strong problem-solving mindset with the ability to identify practical and innovative solutions.
- Field-based role with potential exposure to operational environments.
- May require travel and occasional work outside of standard business hours.
