Position Summary
The Field Specialist – Directional Systems is responsible for planning, executing, and supporting directional drilling operations across onshore oil and gas developments in Australia. The role provides specialized technical expertise in directional drilling and Measurement While Drilling (MWD) / Logging While Drilling (LWD) systems to ensure drilling activities are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with engineering standards and project objectives.

The position supports time sensitive drilling programs across major energy projects and requires the application of advanced technical knowledge, real time drilling analysis, and operational decision making in complex field environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and execute directional drilling operations in accordance with approved drilling programs and well objectives.
  • Steer and maintain the wellbore trajectory to achieve planned directional targets and operational parameters.
  • Operate directional drilling systems and Baker Hughes directional drilling technologies.
  • Operate and monitor Measurement While Drilling (MWD) and Logging While Drilling (LWD) tools for real time data acquisition and transmission.
  • Monitor drilling performance and optimize drilling parameters to improve efficiency and well delivery outcomes.
  • Gather, interpret, and analyze formation evaluation data while drilling.
  • Troubleshoot directional drilling equipment and resolve technical issues during field operations.
  • Ensure all drilling activities comply with Baker Hughes procedures, client specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in project specific induction and training requirements before mobilization to rig sites.
  • Prepare and maintain daily operational reports and technical documentation.
  • Complete End of Well reports detailing drilling performance, operational outcomes, and technical observations.
  • Liaise with drilling teams, rig personnel, clients, and internal stakeholders to support safe and efficient project execution.
  • Contribute to knowledge transfer and support operational best practices within project teams.
Technical Skills and Competencies
  • Advanced knowledge of directional drilling principles and wellbore placement techniques.
  • Strong experience operating directional drilling systems.
  • Experience operating MWD and/or LWD tools and associated software systems.
  • Ability to interpret drilling and formation evaluation data in real time.
  • Knowledge of drilling hydraulics, drilling mechanics, and optimization techniques.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem solving capability.
  • Understanding of health, safety, environmental, and quality standards within oil and gas operations.
  • Ability to work effectively in remote field locations and high pressure operational environments.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Relevant engineering, technical, or oil and gas industry qualification preferred.
  • Significant industry experience supporting directional drilling operations.
  • Demonstrated experience in onshore or offshore oil and gas drilling environments.
  • Experience working on directional drilling projects involving complex well trajectories and drilling programs.
  • Experience with Baker Hughes directional technologies and MWD/LWD systems is highly desirable.
Work Environment
  • Rotation based field assignment across remote project locations.
  • Frequent travel and deployment to drilling rigs and operational sites.
  • Work performed in challenging field environments and operational conditions.
  • Assignment duration is project based and limited to approved project timelines.
