Drilling Superintendent Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline or earth sciences.
- Alternative qualifications may be accepted by the Drilling Director.
- Alternative qualifications may be accepted by the Drilling Director.
- 30+ years of total Drilling Engineering/Operations experience, including 10+ years as a Drilling Superintendent.
- Experience must include:
- Deepwater operations
- Horizontal / Extended-Reach (ERD) well design
- Deepwater operations
- Strong technical background in:
- Casing Design
- Drill String Design
- Cementing Design
- Geomechanics
- Drilling Fluid Engineering
- Drilling Hydraulics & Mechanics
- ERD and Complex Well Design
- HSE Management
- Risk Management Courses may be provided by specialist service companies or training institutions and will be reviewed prior to engagement.
- Casing Design
- IWCF Well Control Certification for floating operations (mandatory).
- A current certificate is preferred as evidence of offshore well control competence.
- A current certificate is preferred as evidence of offshore well control competence.
- Contribute to HSE goal-setting for the project.
- Support the establishment of project performance objectives.
- Draft operational procedures to meet project objectives and mitigate identified hazards.
- Review Drilling and Completion Programs.
- Chair pre-spud meetings.
- Ensure all procured items meet hazard-control and operational requirements.
- Review long-lead material status.
- Authorize contractors to procure materials, equipment, or services.
- Review morning reports; identify HSE risks and initiate actions to maintain ALARP conditions.
- Identify required modifications to ongoing operations and provide technical input.
- Participate in incident/accident investigations and follow-up activities.
- Record learnings in the Learning Register as required.
- Identify and control deviations from the Drilling Program.
- Discuss technical and safety aspects of operations with drilling contractors and subcontractors; confirm materials/equipment needs.
- Participate in HSE audits and investigations as required.
- Align modification requirements with SDE, SCE, and Engineering Section Leader.
- Obtain and incorporate contractor input.
- Review and approve logistics plans.
- Serve as the focal point for contractor coordination.
- Review Learning Register entries.
- Prepare and analyze statistical data.
- Conduct technical analyses and recommend improvements.
- Prepare Well Analysis and Process Review reports.
- Add additional Learning Register entries when necessary.
- Review reports and suggestions; update the Learning Register.
- Conduct technical analysis and recommend improvements.
- Distribute updated Learning Register entries.
- Verify invoices for consistency with services rendered and contract terms.
- Coordinate with Legal and Finance teams as required.
- Ensure drilling operations remain within budget and are cost‑effective.
