Job Summary

The Electrical Designer performs planning, design, drafting, and documentation for electrical engineering projects. Working under engineers and project managers, the designer develops construction drawings, electrical layouts, and equipment details while ensuring compliance with client requirements, industry codes, and company standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design electrical systems for a variety of projects, including:
    • Power distribution systems
    • Single-line diagrams
    • Electrical schematics
    • Lighting systems
    • Grounding systems
    • Protection and control systems
    • Site and facility electrical layouts
  • Produce construction drawings using CAD software such as AutoCAD and MicroStation.
  • Prepare conduit layouts, cable schedules, panel wiring diagrams, and equipment layouts.
  • Perform electrical design calculations and sizing of electrical components.
  • Review engineering drawings for quality, accuracy, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Interpret design codes, specifications, and client requirements.
  • Coordinate with electrical engineers and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Incorporate revisions from engineering markups and client comments.
  • Maintain project documentation and drawing revisions.
  • Communicate effectively with clients and internal teams regarding project progress and technical issues.
Typical Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Drafting Technology or a related field with approximately 7 years of experience, or
  • Associate degree with approximately 8 years of experience, or
  • Around 9 years of progressive electrical design experience.
  • Strong proficiency with:
    • AutoCAD
    • MicroStation
    • Microsoft Excel
    • 2D and 3D electrical design software
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, construction practices, and applicable codes.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
Desired Skills
  • Industrial or utility electrical design experience.
  • Familiarity with:
    • Substations
    • Power generation
    • Transmission and distribution systems
    • Protection and controls
    • BIM/3D modeling tools (depending on the business unit)
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously while meeting schedules and budgets.
