Position Summary
The Furnace Engineer will focus on steam methane reformers, reformer inlet and outlet systems, process gas boilers, and flue gas convection section coils. This role involves collaboration with Mechanical Integrity teams, Reliability Engineers, plant personnel, and capital project teams to support fired equipment analysis, repairs, and upgrades.

Position Summary
The Furnace Engineer will focus on steam methane reformers, reformer inlet and outlet systems, process gas boilers, and flue gas convection section coils. This role involves collaboration with Mechanical Integrity teams, Reliability Engineers, plant personnel, and capital project teams to support fired equipment analysis, repairs, and upgrades.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide engineering support for furnaces and associated equipment across multiple facilities.
- Work closely with Mechanical Integrity teams to assess inspection findings, develop repair plans, and identify root causes to prevent recurring failures.
- Stay current with applicable industry standards and revise internal standards and policies as needed to ensure compliance.
- Support facilities in closing gaps in Process Safety Information (PSI) and management systems, including performing engineering calculations and securing required documentation.
- Perform calculations for reformer tube and pigtail creep, remaining life, refractory heat transfer, and maximum allowable temperature values.
- Manage small capital projects and/or provide technical expertise for furnace and equipment upgrades.
- Assist during fired equipment inspections and corrective actions.
- Support turnaround activities, which may occasionally require work beyond normal business hours.
- Identify chronic issues and damage mechanisms, and develop strategies for resolution.
- Lead or assist in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for furnace failures.
- Approximately 25% domestic travel required.
- BS in Mechanical Engineering preferred, with 10+ years of experience as a fired equipment technical resource in a PSM-regulated facility.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills; ability to work independently and lead cross-functional teams.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive issues to completion.
- Knowledge of corrosion, materials selection, and engineering materials (metals & non-metals).
- Experience with NDE/NDT technologies and applications.
- Working knowledge of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Codes (Section I and VIII), Piping Codes (B31.3 and B31.12), and API standards (560, 530, 941, 510, 570, 579).
- Expertise in welding practices for high nickel alloys, refractory systems, and insulation systems.
- Experience in OSHA PSM-regulated facilities and understanding of mechanical integrity program elements for fired equipment.
