Position Title: JS.CRO.041 Court Reporting Officer
Grade: NJS 09

The National Judicial Staff Services (NJSS) has initiated a major organisational restructure to strengthen its workforce and enhance the delivery of efficient, effective, and quality support services to the Judiciary and courts throughout Papua New Guinea. We invite suitably qualified, experienced, and motivated Papua New Guineans to apply for the position of Court Reporting Officer within the Court Reporting Service division based in Waigani.

Role Overview:
The Court Reporting Officer will report to & support the Production Cell Supervisor by being responsible for executing the core functions of court reporting with precision and professionalism. The Officer specializes in various essential tasks, including transcribing court proceedings, editing transcripts, conducting quality checks, and preparing documents for distribution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend court sessions and produce accurate and verbatim transcripts.
  • Ensure all transcripts are accurate, confidential, and stored securely.
  • Report and resolve technical faults and issues with FTR systems.
  • Undertake National Court circuits and relief duties in regional locations.
  • Liaise with registry officers for case particulars.
  • Act as a Quality Control Officer when required.
  • Capture quality audio and log notes during court/tribunal proceedings.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development.
  • Collaborate with judicial and legal staff to clarify transcript details when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor, ensuring flexibility and adaptability to meet the division's needs.
Required Qualifications and Experience
  • Diploma in Office Administration or equivalent.
  • Certification in court reporting service.
  • While specific prior experience in court reporting is not mandatory, candidates with experience in legal transcription, administrative support within legal settings, or other roles requiring high levels of attention to detail and confidentiality will be considered favourably.
  • General knowledge of legal terminology and court proceedings.
  • Thorough understanding of English grammar, spelling, punctuation and syntax skills.
  • Working knowledge of audio recording.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to type at 60 words a minute with no greater error than 2%.
  • Commitment to accuracy & quality.
  • High level of integrity.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
Preferred
  • Advanced Diploma qualification in related discipline.
  • 3 years or more experience in a legal setting.
This role requires accuracy, confidentiality, adaptability and the ability to perform effectively in dynamic court environments. You will help ensure court proceedings are recorded and transcribed accurately and promptly in support of the Judiciary’s crucial work.
