Offshore Cable Lead: Offshore Wind 

Position Description

The successful candidate will be an experienced submarine cables engineer who will support the delivery of the Cables packages for offshore export cable and inter-array cable systems for Offshore Windfarm projects and grid development projects in Ireland and the United Kingdom. He/she will work as part of the team to ensure that all technical and commercial elements of the cables packages of the project and interactions with technical advisors/suppliers are managed effectively to best industry standards, safely and within budget. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, innovative, commercially driven and have a track record of successfully delivering technical design and construction projects.

Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities will cover the items below:


1. Engineering & Technical Leadership
• Provide expert end-to-end engineering for HV and EHV submarine cable projects at various stages of development for both fixed and dynamic cable applications for voltages ranging from 66 kV to 400 kV)
• Develop and review cable system designs, including conductor sizing, insulation selection,
armouring, and sheath configurations.
• Perform thermal, electrical, and mechanical analyses, including ampacity calculations and cable rating studies.
• Define technical requirements, specifications, and acceptance criteria for cables and accessories (joints, terminations, hang offs).

2. Project Delivery & Assurance
• Support the early-stage development and FEED phase of projects.
• Provide expertise for submarine cable packages across design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning phases.
• Preparation of Employers Requirements for submarine cable projects.
• Oversee type testing, factory acceptance testing, Site Acceptance Testing at manufacturer
facilities.
• Design review and due diligence for submarine cable projects with respect to the Employer's Requirements.
• Manage engineering interfaces between cable suppliers, installation contractors, OEMs, and internal project teams. Work with contractors to investigate ways to optimise cable burial and route engineering.
• Ensure compliance with international standards (e.g., IEC 60228, IEC 62067, CIGRE, DNV
recommendations).

3. Installation & Marine Operations Support
• Provide engineering input into route engineering, burial assessments, and cable protection
strategies.
• Review installation methodologies including lay operations, jointing procedures, pull-ins and termination works.
• Support offshore operations, risk assessments, and readiness reviews.

4. Risk, Quality & HSE
• Lead failure mode analysis, risk mitigation strategies and reliability assessments.
• Manage quality assurance processes and ensure adherence to project specifications.
• Support root cause investigations for cable defects or installation issues.
• Integrate the HSE and environmental requirements set out by the project into the cable delivery strategy; provide package support to their development where necessary.
• Input into risk registers, HSE assessments and engineering decision logs for the cables and feed into wider project processes.

5. Stakeholder & Supply Chain Management
• Collaborate with cable manufacturers, industry bodies, installation contractors and key
stakeholders.
• Provide technical leadership in contract negotiations, tender evaluations, and supplier selection.
• Represent the project in technical meetings, design reviews, and industry forums.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Essential

• Minimum of 7 years’ relevant experience.
• Strong knowledge of HV/EHV cable design, materials, and manufacturing processes.
• Expertise in subsea cable installation engineering and marine operations including cable laying and
burial campaigns, cable embedment, submersible vehicle operations, vessel positioning and
commercial diving procedures.
• Experience with submarine cable installation and testing.
• Experience in technical and commercial evaluation of submarine cable systems.
• Experienced in contract preparation and evaluation for vessels and subsea operations.
• Proficient in H&S standards for terrestrial and offshore projects, including familiarity with CDMC /
IMO / IMCA requirements and recommendations.
• Strong stakeholder management capability and good communication skills.
• Strong project and programme management capability.
• Experience in managing and delivering complex projects.
• Experience in negotiating agreements and contracts of significant value.
• Good decision-making capability and judgement.

Desirable
• Proficiency in cable modelling tools (e.g. CYMCAP, COMSOL).
• Experienced in Dynamic Thermal Rating Systems such as DTS and RTTR systems.
• Experienced in subsea surveys and engineering including interpretation of geotechnical and
geophysical reports.
• Submarine cable design, and development of specifications and employers’ requirements.
• Understanding of offshore wind farm electrical systems and grid compliance.
• Strong leadership and decision making abilities.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management.
• Ability to work in multidisciplinary, international project environments.

Qualifications

Essential
• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline; chartership preferred.
• 7–10+ years of experience in HV submarine cables, offshore wind or transmission projects.
• Experience working with major cable OEMs or EPC contractors.
