MWD Engineer (Offshore)
Role Summary
An Offshore MWD Engineer is responsible for real-time acquisition, monitoring, and transmission of downhole drilling data from offshore rigs, ensuring accurate well placement and safe operations in a high-risk marine environment.
Stationed on offshore drilling rigs (jack-up, semi-submersible, drillship) and work closely with drilling crews, directional drillers, and remote operations teams.

Role Summary
An Offshore MWD Engineer is responsible for real-time acquisition, monitoring, and transmission of downhole drilling data from offshore rigs, ensuring accurate well placement and safe operations in a high-risk marine environment.
Stationed on offshore drilling rigs (jack-up, semi-submersible, drillship) and work closely with drilling crews, directional drillers, and remote operations teams.
Core Responsibilities (Offshore Focus) :
1. Real-Time Downhole Data Management
- Acquire and monitor real-time MWD data, including:
- Inclination, azimuth (well trajectory)
- Pressure, temperature, vibration
- Formation evaluation data
- Ensure continuous data transmission via mud pulse telemetry.
- Maintain high-quality data for geosteering and drilling decisions.
- Assemble and test MWD tools before running in hole.
- Perform:
- Pre-job calibration
- Function tests
- System checks under offshore conditions.
- Monitor systems 24/7 while drilling is ongoing.
- Diagnose and fix issues such as:
- Signal loss
- Tool failure
- Sensor inaccuracies
- Minimize costly downtime (critical in offshore operations).
- Provide real-time input to:
- Directional driller
- Drilling engineer
- Help:
- Keep well trajectory on plan
- Prevent collision with nearby wells
- Optimize drilling performance
- Ensure accurate and timely job deliverables. Participate in:
- Job planning
- Risk assessments
- Continuous improvement initiatives
- Strict adherence to offshore HSE policies and procedures:
- Hazard identification
- Permit-to-work systems
- Emergency drills
- Maintain:
- PPE compliance
- Safety training certifications
- Prepare:
- Daily drilling reports
- Tool performance logs
- Post-job analysis
- Act as technical liaison with offshore client reps.
- Manage mobilization/demobilization of tools via:
- Supply vessels or helicopters
- Maintain offshore inventory and ensure equipment readiness.
- Based on offshore rigs with rotations (e.g., 28/28 or 21/21 days)
- Work in:
- Harsh weather conditions
- Confined and hazardous environments
- 12-hour shifts, often day/night rotations
- On-call during drilling operations (24/7 coverage)
- Bachelor’s degree in:
- Petroleum / Mechanical / Electrical Engineering
- Offshore certifications (often required):
- BOSIET / FOET
- HUET (Helicopter safety)
- Strong troubleshooting and pressure-performance skills
- Ability to work in remote offshore environments
- Real-time decision making under pressure
- Advanced troubleshooting (telemetry & sensors)
- Strong communication with multi-disciplinary offshore teams
- High safety awareness and compliance mindset
