NES Fircroft have partnered with a leading industrial manufacturing business operating a large scale chemical processing facility in Gladstone to recruit a Process Safety Engineer. This is a key technical role within the site’s leadership and engineering team, responsible for driving process safety performance, compliance, and continuous improvement across a Major Hazard Facility environment. You will work closely with site leadership and technical teams to ensure robust process safety systems are in place, supporting safe operations, strong regulatory compliance, and a proactive safety culture.
About the Role
Reporting to the General Manager Manufacturing Readiness, you will lead and support site-wide process safety activities, focusing on operational readiness, risk management, and safety system performance. This is a hands-on, influential role providing technical leadership across a complex operating environment.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and support Operational Readiness activities in line with site plans and requirements
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of the site Safety Case
• Oversee quantitative risk assessments, Bow Tie analysis, and SFARP assessments completed by consultants
• Facilitate or lead process hazard studies including HAZOP, LOPA, SIL and related workshops
• Identify process safety training needs across site personnel during operational readiness and ongoing operations
• Develop, implement, and continuously improve HSEQ policies, procedures, and systems
• Ensure compliance with Major Hazard Facility requirements, gas safety management plans, and regulatory approvals
• Lead and support incident investigations, ensuring robust root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions
• Engage with regulators and government agencies as required to support compliance and approvals
• Develop and implement process safety performance monitoring, auditing, and reporting systems
• Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical support to site personnel on process safety matters
About You
• Minimum 3 years experience in a Major Hazard Facility or chemical processing environment
• Tertiary qualification in chemical, process, materials engineering, or relevant safety or environmental discipline
• Strong experience with process hazard analysis methodologies such as HAZOP, LOPA, or SIL studies
• Experience in operational readiness or plant start up within large scale processing environments highly regarded
• Strong understanding of process safety systems, compliance frameworks, and regulatory requirements
• Ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively across multidisciplinary teams
• Strong influencing, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills
• Proactive, resilient, and committed to driving a strong safety culture
