Rotation: Monday - Friday
 
Role Summary
The Contract Project Engineer is a technically strong and independently accountable member of the Major Projects Facility team. This role leads and coordinates the full lifecycle delivery of facility capital projects, from opportunity identification through execution and turnover.
 
Operating within Project Delivery System (PDS), the Project Engineer drives rigorous project definition across Stage 1 through Stage 4. This includes development of stage workplans, project execution plans, risk management plans, cost estimates, and schedules, ensuring all key elements are established prior to full funds authorization.
 
The role manages multidisciplinary engineering contractor teams through pre-FEED, FEED, and detailed engineering phases. It also coordinates technical reviews (HAZID, HAZOP, model and constructability reviews), governs procurement processes, and acts as a key technical integrator across all engineering disciplines.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Progress facility debottlenecking, expansion, regulatory, or innovation projects through company stage gates, ensuring strong business plans, safety mitigation, scope definition, cost estimates, and stage workplans
  • Ensure successful handover of high-quality projects to the next owner in the project lifecycle
  • Build effective relationships with Business, Reservoir Management, Operations, Process Engineering, Innovation teams, and other stakeholders
  • Engage with enabling teams to ensure regulatory compliance, environmental responsibility, and community engagement
  • Manage multiple concurrent projects with competing priorities, ensuring proper sequencing and delivery flow
  • Plan and coordinate deliverables across internal teams and external engineering contractors
  • Partner with Project Controls to develop estimates, forecast costs, and manage budgets
  • Collaborate with Construction and Commissioning teams through site visits to incorporate practical insights
  • Identify and drive cost and schedule optimization opportunities across all project phases (engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, start-up)
  • Promote and uphold safety values
  • Manage scope changes, risk registers, project controls, and earned value tracking
 
Role Scope
  • Acts as a technical integrator across process, piping, instrumentation, electrical, and civil/structural disciplines
  • Oversees engineering execution from early-stage definition to project completion
  • Ensures alignment with company stage gate governance and project delivery standards
  • Leads technical decision-making and coordination across multiple stakeholders
  • Maintains accountability for project quality, cost, schedule, and safety performance
 
Qualifications
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registered with APEGA
  • 10–15 years of experience in SAGD facility, refinery/upgrader, or conventional oil & gas facility projects
  • Proven track record of successful project delivery and team accountability
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Previous field-based project experience
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to foster collaboration and influence stakeholders
  • Extensive knowledge of ASME codes and standards for design, fabrication, and construction
  • Strong understanding of project controls systems and tools
 
Working Conditions
  • Combination of office and field engagement depending on project phase
  • Collaboration with internal teams, contractors, and site personnel
  • Potential travel to project sites as required
