Project Welding Manager

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Located on the project, a Project Welding Manager (PWM) is responsible for supporting the Market/District Welding Manager in the implementation, oversight, and continuous improvement of the district and corporate welding programs as well as the project specific welding plan all at the project level. This role focuses on hands-on field support, training, as well as technical support and welding related procurement to ensure all welding activities meet project requirements, code compliance, and productivity expectations. The PWM plays a key role in planning, executing, and troubleshooting welding operations while driving safety, quality, and efficiency across the project.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Planning & Coordination
  • Responsible for development of Project Specific Welding Plan
  • Coordinate with construction, engineering, QC, safety, and scheduling teams to ensure alignment.
  • Participate in up-front project planning for welding operations, including:
    • Work sequencing
    • Resource allocation
    • Equipment and consumable planning
    • Risk identification and mitigation
Training & Workforce Development
  • Conduct initial welding onboarding and monitor field qualification process for new hire welders.
  • Support and conduct welder training, including refresher sessions and performance improvement coaching.
  • Identify individual welder strengths and align personnel with tasks that best match their skill sets.
  • Promote continuous improvement through targeted training based on performance trends.
Field Support & Technical Guidance
  • Assist field staff in identifying correct weld procedures and qualified welders for each application.
  • Provide technical troubleshooting for welding-related issues, equipment concerns, and material challenges.
  • Provide direct support to welders in the field, including:
    • “Hood-on” coaching and hands-on technique improvement
    • Verification of welding parameters for WPS compliance
    • In-process welding surveillance and real-time corrective guidance
Productivity Tracking & Performance Management
  • Support field staff to ensure productivity meets or exceeds expectations.
  • Monitor welding performance metrics and provide support to improve performance if needed.
  • Report production rates, issues, and corrective actions to the Market/District Welding Manager

Quality Assurance & Code Compliance
  • Maintain strong working knowledge of applicable codes and standards (AWS, ASME, etc.).
  • Ensure adherence to the companies Welding Quality Management System (QMS).
  • Assist with welding audits, assessments, and compliance reviews as is required
  • Work closely with QC and NDE personnel to track, analyze, and trend rejectable and non-rejectable indications.
  • Identify and report findings that reveal leading indicators, enabling proactive tracking and corrective action before issues emerge
Documentation & Reporting
  • Support compilation of documentation required for audits, and turnover packages.
  • Maintain accurate records of welder qualifications and welding performance.
  • Report welding issues, successes, and trends to the Market/District Welding Manager for district-level tracking and troubleshooting.
Safety & Compliance Leadership
  • Promote and enforce safe welding practices in accordance with project and corporate safety programs.
  • Identify and mitigate welding-related hazards, including hot work risks a well as equipment safety and environmental risks.

Qualifications
  • Minimum five years of industrial welding experience, including production welding.
  • Experience in power generation or heavy industrial construction preferred.
  • Prior supervisory or leadership experience in welding operations.
  • Prior welding certifications required with ability to pass GTAW/SMAW super-coupon test.
  • Experience with semi-automatic welding processes is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of relevant construction codes, standards, and jurisdictional requirements is plus (AWS D1.1, D1.6, ASME Section I, V, IX, B31.1, B31.3  etc.).
  • Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Must be willing to relocate based on project requirements.
