Location: Calgary or Edmonton, AB
Length: 1 Year (with potential extension)
Rotation: 3 days in office (Mon/Tues/Thurs) and 2 days remote (Wed/Friday)
Role Summary
Our client is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Oversight Electrical Engineer to oversee engineering and design aspects of utility-scale solar and wind projects across the USA and Canada. This role is responsible for reviewing and managing EPC contractor engineering deliverables (IFR and IFC), ensuring compliance with project requirements, industry standards, and interconnection regulations.
The position also involves evaluating high-voltage substation and renewable plant designs, supporting interconnection processes, and providing technical leadership throughout the full project lifecycle.

Role Summary

This role is responsible for reviewing and managing EPC contractor engineering deliverables (IFR and IFC), ensuring compliance with project requirements, industry standards, and interconnection regulations.
The position also involves evaluating high-voltage substation and renewable plant designs, supporting interconnection processes, and providing technical leadership throughout the full project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the review of EPC contractor engineering and design packages (IFR and IFC) to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable codes (NEC, NESC, IEEE, NFPA, etc.)
- Provide technical feedback and coordinate design improvements with EPC contractors and stakeholders
- Assess HV substation and PV/wind plant electrical designs, including:
- Substation general arrangements
- One-line diagrams
- Grounding systems
- Protection schemes and relay coordination studies
- Ensure integration of MV and HV equipment, including main power transformers (MPTs), inverters, switchgear, and circuit breakers
- Verify adherence to industry standards including IEEE, UL, CSA, NFPA, NESC, and NEC
- Identify design risks and recommend cost-effective engineering solutions
- Support regulatory and interconnection compliance efforts (ERCOT, FERC, NERC) in collaboration with internal teams
- Ensure readiness of engineering documentation for submission to regulatory authorities
- Prepare and review detailed engineering and construction drawings to support efficient project execution
- Ensure compliance with internal procedures, technical standards, and environmental, health, and safety requirements
- Participate in design reviews to align scope, performance expectations, and consistency
- Lead specification and procurement support activities by reviewing vendor quotations, performing technical bid evaluations, and recommending solutions
- Collaborate with Supply Chain on material procurement through internal systems
- Provide technical support across all project phases: development, design, construction, commissioning, and close-out
- Address engineering-related RFIs and field modifications during construction
- Support commissioning and testing of HV substations and renewable plant systems, including protection systems
- Participate in factory acceptance tests (FAT) and site acceptance tests (SAT) as required
- Recommend improvements to internal standards and engineering processes
- Coordinate with utility providers and stakeholders
- Support project development activities including scope definition, scheduling, cost estimating, execution planning, and risk identification
Role Scope
- Accountable for technical performance and delivery within the assigned scope, with significant financial and operational impact
- Oversees development and implementation of technical solutions and ensures alignment across internal and external stakeholders
- Provides informal leadership, guidance, and mentorship to peers and project teams
Qualifications
Required:
- 10–15 years of experience in electrical engineering design and commissioning
- Minimum 5 years in oil & gas and at least 3 years in renewable energy projects (solar, wind, HV substations, BESS, grid interconnection)
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with APEGA (or equivalent), or eligibility to register
- Strong knowledge of:
- HV substations (34.5kV – 345kV)
- Renewable plant electrical systems
- Power system analysis
- Protection and control schemes
- Solid understanding of grid interconnection processes and renewable integration
- Strong communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to influence decisions without formal authority
- Valid driver’s license (subject to verification)
Preferred:
- Experience with SCADA systems, RTUs, and communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus, IEC 61850)
- Knowledge of advanced electrical studies, including:
- Cable heating and losses (AC/DC)
- TRV and insulation coordination
- Grounding, load flow, and short circuit analysis
- Transformer energization studies
- Experience using power system analysis tools such as PSS/E, ETAP, PSCAD, or SKM
Working Conditions
- Hybrid work model (3 days in office, 2 days remote)
- Approximately 10% travel, including field visits and vendor shop inspections
- Overnight travel may be required
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required in field environments
- Must be eligible to travel to the United States
