Job Title: Welding Engineer (FPSO Refurbishment) Location: Filyos Shipyard, Turkey
Rotation: 28 days on / 28 days off
Project Type: FPSO Refurbishment / Life Extension / Brownfield Upgrade
Employment Type: Contract (Rotational)
Start Date: ASAP / TBC
Reporting To: QA/QC Manager / Welding Superintendent / Construction Manager (project dependent)

Job Summary We are seeking an experienced Welding Engineer to support welding, fabrication and repair activities on a major FPSO refurbishment programme based in the Filyos shipyard. The Welding Engineer will provide technical oversight and assurance across welding procedures, welder qualifications, consumables control and weld quality, ensuring all work is executed in accordance with applicable codes/standards, client specifications and project quality plans.

This role is suited to a hands-on engineer with strong shipyard/brownfield experience who can manage multiple workfronts, interface with QA/QC, NDT, production and client representatives, and drive technical resolution to welding-related issues in a high-pressure refurbishment environment.

Key Responsibilities Welding Engineering & Technical Assurance
  • Provide welding engineering support across refurbishment scopes (structural repairs, piping spools, topsides modifications, deck plating, supports, appurtenances, etc.).
  • Develop, review and approve WPS/PQR documentation (where authorised), ensuring alignment with project requirements and applicable codes.
  • Ensure welder qualification tests (WPQ/WQT) are planned, executed and recorded to required standards.
  • Support welding technique selection and optimisation (GTAW/SMAW/FCAW/GMAW/SAW) according to material grades, thickness, position and access constraints.
Quality Control & Inspection Interface
  • Work closely with QA/QC, welding inspectors and NDT teams to ensure weld quality targets are met and inspection requirements are achieved.
  • Ensure weld maps, traceability, NDT requests, repair logs and handover packs are accurate and up to date.
  • Support resolution of weld defects (porosity, lack of fusion, cracking, undercut, lamellar tearing risks, etc.) with robust technical recommendations and repair strategies.
  • Participate in inspections, hold points and client/third-party verifications as required.
Consumables, Materials & Traceability
  • Implement and maintain welding consumables control (issue, storage, baking/holding ovens, batch tracking, electrode control, F-number/A-number where applicable).
  • Support material control and traceability for parent materials, filler metals and critical components to meet project QA requirements.
  • Review MTCs and ensure correct material selection for corrosion/compatibility (including low temperature requirements and sour service where applicable).
Production Support & Planning
  • Provide day-to-day support to welding/fabrication teams to maintain productivity while ensuring compliance.
  • Review and advise on weld sequencing, distortion control, preheat/interpass temperature requirements and heat input control.
  • Support PWHT planning (if applicable), including temperature charts, soak times, thermocouple placement and acceptance criteria.
  • Identify constraints early (access, fit-up, prep, environmental factors, consumables availability) and propose mitigations.
Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure welding operations comply with site HSE requirements (hot work permits, fire watch, fume control, confined space, gas testing).
  • Promote best practice for welding safety, housekeeping and hazard controls in a shipyard SIMOPS environment.
Documentation & Reporting
  • Maintain welding documentation packs: WPS, PQR, WPQ, weld logs, NDT reports, repair summaries, consumables registers, calibration records.
  • Provide daily/weekly reporting on welding progress, constraints, NCRs and key quality metrics (repair rates, defect trends, closure performance).
Required Experience & Competencies
  • 5+ years experience as a Welding Engineer (or similar welding technical authority role) in oil & gas, marine, shipyard or heavy fabrication.
  • Proven experience supporting brownfield projects: refurbishment, repair, shutdown/turnaround, or life-extension work.
  • Strong knowledge of welding processes and practical shipyard fabrication constraints (restricted access, positional welding, variable base material condition).
  • Competence in weld quality management, defect troubleshooting, and working to inspection/test plans.
  • Strong stakeholder management: able to interface with client, third-party inspectors, QA/QC, production and planning.
  • Solid reporting and documentation discipline; comfortable working with registers, punch lists, MDRs and turnover packs.
Standards / Codes (Project Dependent – Typical) (Tailor to the client’s spec. You can keep this broad if they accept equivalents.)

  • ASME (e.g., IX for qualifications; B31.3/B31.1 for piping where applicable)
  • AWS D1.1 / DNV / ISO 15614 series / EN ISO 9606 series (as required by project/client)
  • Project-specific welding specs and ITP requirements
Qualifications & Certifications (Preferred / Typical)
  • Degree/HND in Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy or similar (or equivalent practical experience).
  • Recognised welding qualification advantageous:
    • IWE / IWT / IWS (International Welding Engineer/Technologist/Specialist)
    • CSWIP 3.1/3.2 (or equivalent welding inspector background) beneficial
  • NDT awareness (PCN/ASNT knowledge helpful though not essential)
