About the role
A Hydro-electric Power Plant Manager is responsible for overseeing the operations, maintenance, and optimization of a hydroelectric power generation facility. The role focuses on ensuring that the hydroelectric plant runs efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulations, while also maximizing output and minimizing downtime. The position requires a deep understanding of electrical and mechanical systems, hydrodynamics, environmental considerations, and regulatory compliance

Roles and responsibilities

1. Operations Management:
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the hydroelectric power plant, ensuring the plant operates safely and efficiently.
  • Manage the monitoring of water flow, turbine operation, and electrical generation systems to ensure optimal performance.
  • Ensure the hydro plant operates within design parameters and performance benchmarks, adjusting water flow and power generation as necessary to meet demand.
  • Monitor real-time system performance, identifying any issues or inefficiencies and taking corrective actions promptly.
2. Maintenance and Reliability:
  • Develop and oversee preventive and corrective maintenance schedules for all plant equipment, including turbines, generators, transformers, and control systems.
  • Coordinate inspections, repairs, and upgrades to ensure that equipment operates reliably and efficiently.
  • Minimize downtime and respond swiftly to any equipment malfunctions, providing technical guidance to the maintenance team.
3. Safety and Environmental Compliance:
  • Ensure that the plant adheres to all safety standards, environmental regulations, and industry best practices.
  • Implement and enforce safety protocols to protect plant employees and the surrounding environment.
  • Maintain compliance with environmental laws related to water use, emissions, wildlife protection, and waste management.
  • Work with regulatory bodies to ensure that the plant meets all operational permits and requirements, including water discharge and quality standards.
4. Team Leadership and Staff Development:
  • Lead, manage, and motivate a team of engineers, technicians, and other plant staff.
  • Provide training and professional development opportunities to ensure that staff is knowledgeable about plant operations, safety protocols, and emergency procedures.
  • Evaluate employee performance and implement corrective actions as necessary.
5. Operational Optimization and Performance Monitoring:
  • Continuously monitor plant performance, identifying areas for improvement in terms of efficiency, capacity, and cost.
  • Utilize SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems and other control technologies to manage operations and track performance metrics.
  • Analyze data and implement process improvements or upgrades to optimize power generation and reduce operational costs.
  • Perform capacity planning to maximize energy output, adjusting operations in response to fluctuations in water availability and demand.
6. Budget and Financial Management:
  • Develop and manage the hydroelectric plant’s budget, including capital expenditure, operational costs, and maintenance expenses.
  • Analyze energy market trends and coordinate power production to ensure cost-effective energy generation.
  • Track the financial performance of the plant and provide cost-benefit analysis for potential upgrades or new projects.
7. Project Management and Capital Planning:
  • Oversee the planning, design, and execution of capital projects, including facility upgrades, new technology implementations, and infrastructure improvements.
  • Coordinate with engineers, contractors, and vendors to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Plan for future expansion or modification of the plant’s capabilities to meet increasing demand or incorporate new technologies.
8. Emergency Response and Contingency Planning:
  • Develop and implement emergency response protocols to handle natural disasters, equipment failures, or other unforeseen events that could impact plant operations.
  • Coordinate emergency drills with the plant team to ensure a well-prepared workforce.
  • Respond to operational incidents, ensuring a quick and effective resolution to minimize damage and downtime.
9. Communication and Reporting:
  • Regularly report to senior management and stakeholders regarding plant performance, operational challenges, and financial status.
  • Ensure the plant provides reliable and accurate data for regulatory reporting and audits.
  • Communicate with external stakeholders, including local communities, regulatory authorities, and environmental organizations, about plant operations and sustainability efforts.

Skills and Qualifications:
  • Must be a Professional or Registered Electrical Engineer
  • Minimum 12 years of experience in hydroelectric power plant operations
  • Background in budgeting and financial management experience, with the ability to optimize operational costs.
  • Strong technical knowledge of hydroelectric systems, turbines, generators, and power transmission.
  • In-depth understanding of water flow management, hydrology, and energy generation optimization.
  • Familiarity with plant control systems (e.g., SCADA, DCS) and automation.
  • Expertise in safety, environmental regulations, and emergency response protocols.
  • Strong leadership, decision-making, and team management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills for managing internal teams and external stakeholders.
