How do you stop one of the most powerful rivers on Earth long enough to build a 22‑gigawatt power plant?
Engineers had to do exactly that to build the Three Gorges Dam in China, one of the most ambitious megastructures ever attempted. It stretches 2.3 kilometres and stands 185 metres tall, making it one of the largest hydroelectric power plants on earth. And it’s so big, the sheer mass of it nudged the Earth’s rotational axis by roughly 2cm and caused a tiny increase in the length of a day.
In this video, we're diving inside the construction of the world's largest hydroelectric dam.
