Senior Project Manager - Substations

Job Description
The Senior Project Manager is accountable for the safe and timely delivery of substation construction projects. The Senior Project Manager creates an environment for construction execution excellence. The Senior Project Manager encompasses the simultaneous management of several projects ranging anywhere in value from $5,000.00 to $20,000,000.00. They are directly accountable for the profitability of each of the projects they manage and are constantly looking for opportunities to improve on the delivery and customer experience of substation construction projects. The Senior Project Manager needs to work closely with the VP Operations, Manager, Project Management and VP Shared Services, Construction Manager, Quality Manager, HSSE Manager, Fleet Manager, and Field Supervisors to ensure all client/owners expectations are met or exceeded.

Qualifications

Education
  • Professional Engineer or Registered Technologist certification, or technical trade certification.
  • PMI designation is preferred.
  • P. Eng designation is considered an asset.
Experience
  • 15+ years of Project Management experience.
  • 10+ years of managing construction projects.
  • 10+ years’ experience in management or leadership position.
  • Extensive project management experience with small to mid-sized projects.
  • Extensive and broad high voltage construction experience.
  • Experience building and adapting defined systems, processes, and procedures with an eye on growth.
Skills
  • Advanced project management skills including financial acumen, forecasting, estimating, and accruals.
  • Strong change management and planning skills.
  • Understanding of the procurement and purchasing process.
  • Understanding of engineering design and development processes.
  • Ability to resolve complex issues in a timely manner.
  • Superior client and relationship management skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and Microsoft Project.
  • Expert mentorship and leadership skills.
  • Ability to analyze and design solutions to operational problems.
Other
  • This position is a mix of office and field work.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
  • Strong written and communication skills.
Duties

Project Management
  • Define the scope and budget of the project in collaboration with senior management.
  • Create a detailed work plan which identifies and sequences the activities needed to successfully complete the project.
  • Determine the resources (time, money, equipment, etc.) required to complete the project.
  • Develop a schedule for project completion that effectively allocates the resources to the correct activities.
  • Develop a project financial forecast that meets or exceeds the proposal gross margin.
  • Review the project schedule with senior management and all other staff that will be affected by the project activities; revise the schedule as required.
  • Determine the objectives and measures upon which the project will be evaluated at its completion (Lessons Learned).
Project Staffing
  • In consultation with the construction manager, develop staffing plan for the project.
  • Ensure man hours are properly tracked and all overtime is approved.
  • Ensure that all project personnel receive an appropriate orientation to the organization and the project.
Project Execution
  • Execute project to meet or exceed proposal estimated GM.
  • In conjunction with field supervisor and construction manager, manage day-to-day tasks of the project.
  • Procure subcontractor services and material as per the approved proposal. Ensure PO’s and contracts are issued for all services and material.
  • Familiarize yourself with all contract terms. Ensure all contractual commitments are understood and tracked.
  • Create and manage change orders as required.
  • Set up file structure to ensure that all project information is appropriately documented, stored, and secured.
  • Monitor the progress of the project and adjust as necessary to ensure the successful completion of the project.
  • Review the quality of the work completed with the project team on a regular basis to ensure that it meets the client’s expectations.
  • Escalate major project issues to VP of Projects and VP of Shared Services for support in developing resolution.
Project Control
  • Write reports on the project for management.
  • Monitor and approve all budgeted project expenditures.
  • Monitor cash flow forecasts and report actual cash flow and variance to senior management on a regular basis (monthly).
  • Ensure all scope changes are captured, approved, and forecasted via our client change management process.
  • Prepare financial reports and supporting documentation for funders as outlined in funding agreements.
  • Prepare monthly invoices and establish progress revenue accrual as required.
HR
  • Contribute to job descriptions and performance evaluations.
  • Develop short and long-term HR requirement plans in conjunction with senior management.
Leadership
  • Engage in conflict resolution and work with managers, staff, and clients to resolve issues.
  • Hold regularly scheduled 1:1s with project team members. Attend regular tactical and strategic meetings as required.
  • Attend all project-relevant meetings such as project handoff, kick-offs, client, and reviews.
  • Supervise, direct, train, and mentor project team on the same or multiple sites.
  • Develop and facilitate teams to develop creative solutions to complex problems.
Responsibilities
  • Ensure that all direct reports complete the duties as defined in their respective job descriptions.
  • Ensure all projects are profitable and meet or exceed proposal margins.
  • Client management and repeat business.
  • Leadership with willingness to lead, take charge, coach, and provide direction.
