Wellsite Geologist
The Wellsite Geologist plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient execution of geological operations during drilling activities. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Responsibilities
Operational Coordination
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between the office-based Operations Geologist, NWS team, and offshore personnel.
  • Review and familiarize with all relevant wellsite reference data, including subsurface technical packages, offset well logs, maps, and operational challenges (provided by Ops Geologist prior to well start-up).
Geological Oversight
  • Ensure cuttings samples are collected and described in accordance with the Geological Operations Plan, providing detailed interpretative descriptions.
  • Provide geological interpretation of mud logs to support operational decisions and at total depth.
  • Advise on potential geological hazards and support root cause analysis for Non-Productive Time (NPT) events.
Data Acquisition & Quality Control
  • Coordinate data acquisition from service providers (LWD, wireline logging, mud logging, coring).
  • Communicate program revisions and ensure timely updates to service crews.
  • Advise MWD, mud logging personnel, and directional drillers on subsurface data and program requirements.
  • Maintain quality control of all subsurface data and geological operations.
Team Leadership & Communication
  • Act as liaison between the Wellsite Leader and mudlogging crew, ensuring alignment on key geological and operational issues.
  • Mentor and coach CLIENT’s badge geologists in wellsite activities.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Wellsite Leader, Driller, and Ops Geologist to share observations and manage geological risks.
Compliance & Offshore Readiness
  • Ensure adherence to CLIENT’s policies, Code of Conduct, and values.
  • Meet all HSSE offshore readiness requirements, including certifications: TWIC, HUET, LTGO, Work VISA, Letter of Determination, and logistics registration.
  • Ensure conformance to CLIENT’s Group Practices for pore pressure detection.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications and competencies:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology or related field.
  • 10–20 years of experience as a Wellsite Geologist (preferred).
  • Offshore exploration experience, particularly in the Trinidad Columbus Basin (minimum 3 years).
  • Flexible work schedule aligned with drilling activity.
  • Proven track record of safe behavior and active participation in rig safety programs.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills essential for safe and successful well execution.

Deliverables & Meetings
Offshore
  • Attend daily morning calls, tour meetings, hole section previews, and pre-spud meetings.
  • Participate in handover meetings with Wellsite Geologist counterparts.
  • Liaise regularly with Wellsite Leader and Driller to communicate geological risks.
Onshore
  • Maintain regular contact with Operations Geologist to share observations and updates.
Documentation & Reporting
  • Keep the well data book current throughout drilling operations.
  • Compile draft geological operations summaries after each hole section for the End of Well Report (EOWR), including:
    • Rock sample descriptions
    • Hydrocarbon shows
    • Anomalous events
    • Review and document lessons learned after each hole section.
    • Maintain geology and engineering files.
    • Expedite final logs and data.
    • Correlate well data to support casing point, core point, and total depth decisions.
